HOW ELECTROLOGISTS ARE REGULATED

New Jersey state requires a license to practice electrolysis and, unlike most states, it’s governed by the medical board, not the cosmetology board.

The Electrologists Advisory Committee, which falls under the supervision of the State Board of Medical Examiners », is charged with licensing electrologists and electrology offices, approving electrology education programs throughout the State, adopting standards for courses in continuing professional education, and conducting inspections and investigations of the premises of electrology offices in New Jersey.

Educational Requirements: To become a NJ state electrologist, an individual must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, successfully completed an approved electrolysis program where they were instructed in a total of six-hundred total hours - 200 hours in theoretical practice of electrology and 400 hours of instruction in clinical work.

State License Exams: There are two state examination requirements

The applicant must also pass a criminal background check.

The AEA also offers The Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE) credential » which is voluntary and signifies an electrologist’s knowledge has been tested and measured against a national standard of excellence. An electrologist cannot take the CPE exam until they have completed a minimum of one year of professional hours.
